We’ve spent the last 8 years converting a 10 acre property into a homestead, but we are ready for the next big adventure. We have increased our acreage dramatically and bought a farm! It was a formal dairy farm with a beautiful barn, fields to utilize as pasture and farmland, and acres of woodland perfect for hunting. The property also has a river running through it and a small hunting cabin. It really feels like home and we are so happy to be here.
This property has allowed us to add a few new additions. I plan to feature them over the next few posts, but our biggest addition is a heifer we named Lorelai. She is due to calve this summer and we will finally have a family milk cow!
She is lovely and has been well behaved with us, including the kids. We are working on getting her comfortable enough to be milked. We’ve got our work cut out for us though, because we will have to fence in a pasture for her. We have the space, we just have to buckle down and do the work. Thankfully we have a lot of barn space and a nice big chicken coop.
The work will get started as soon as we finish moving. The farm is about 2 hours away from our previous homestead. We are still moving some of our things, but our oldest is attending school in our new town and we are settling in. Our neighbors have been so welcoming and kind. We really feel like this is exactly where we are meant to be and the kids are LOVING IT!
We have accepted an offer on our previous homestead and look forward to handing it off to the next family to enjoy. I will miss the perennials, fruit trees, berry plants, and that cookstove though! I will miss it, but the opportunities and possibilities are endless at the farm and I can’t wait to get started.
